About Celsius to Fahrenheit

Celsius and Fahrenheit are the awkward pair because they disagree about two things at once: how big a degree is, and where zero sits. Fahrenheit degrees are 5/9 the size of Celsius degrees, and its zero is 32 degrees below freezing. Both facts have to be applied, in the right order, which is why mental conversion goes wrong so much more often than it does for metres and feet.

The rough rule — double it and add 30 — is fine for weather and misleading everywhere else. At 20 °C it gives 70 against a true 68; at 200 °C it gives 430 against a true 392, an error of nearly 40 degrees. For an oven, a sous-vide bath or a datasheet tolerance, the real formula matters, and this converter applies it exactly.

Kelvin and Rankine are included because they turn up whenever the physics gets serious. Kelvin measures from absolute zero, which makes it the scale where ratios actually mean something — twice the kelvins really is twice the thermal energy, while "twice as many degrees Celsius" means nothing at all. Rankine does the same job with Fahrenheit-sized degrees and still appears in older US engineering tables.

What is the formula?
°F = °C × 9/5 + 32. In reverse, °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. The multiplication comes first: forgetting that and adding 32 before scaling is the usual error.
What are the everyday values?
Body temperature 37 °C is 98.6 °F. Room temperature 20 °C is 68 °F. A hot day at 35 °C is 95 °F. Water freezes at 0 °C / 32 °F and boils at 100 °C / 212 °F. Ovens: 180 °C is 356 °F and 200 °C is 392 °F.
Where do the two scales give the same number?
At −40. Minus forty degrees Celsius is exactly minus forty degrees Fahrenheit — the one temperature where the scales cross, and a handy way to check any conversion tool.
Why can't I just multiply Celsius by a single factor?
Because the scales have different zero points as well as different step sizes. A one-degree change in Celsius equals a 1.8-degree change in Fahrenheit, but one degree Celsius is 33.8 degrees Fahrenheit. That offset is why temperature is handled separately from every other unit on this site.
Does it do Kelvin and Rankine too?
Yes, all four scales convert to each other. Kelvin starts at absolute zero, so 0 °C is 273.15 K; Rankine is the Fahrenheit-sized equivalent, where 0 °C is 491.67 °R.
What happens if I enter something below absolute zero?
It converts it anyway. This is a maths tool, not a physics checker, so −500 °C returns a Kelvin value below zero rather than an error. Treat results below −273.15 °C as arithmetic, not as a real temperature.
