Kuaishou: The Other Short-Video Giant

Kuaishou is the short-video giant most of the world has never opened. Founded in 2011 (it began life as a GIF-making tool before pivoting to video), it predates Douyin and grew a different way: community-first, strong outside the megacities, and famously effective at live commerce.

Kuaishou vs Douyin, culturally

  • Distribution: Kuaishou historically gave followers more weight — creators' audiences actually see them — while Douyin leans harder on pure interest-feed discovery.
  • Relationship depth: the "old iron" (loyal fan) culture makes live streams feel like gatherings, which is exactly why live-commerce conversion runs hot there.
  • Geography: its heartland is smaller cities and northern China, complementing Douyin's metro skew.

The metrics that matter there

Followers count, but live-room numbers count more: concurrent viewers, gifts and orders-per-stream are the working currency (the same live-tipping logic explained in Super Chats and gifts). It is the clearest proof worldwide that follower loyalty, not follower totals, is what monetises.
