The title of most-subscribed YouTube channel has changed hands only a few times, and each handover was an internet event. The modern era is defined by three names.
PewDiePie: the individual era
For most of the 2010s, PewDiePie was the face of the crown — the proof that a single creator could out-draw media companies. The count itself became content: millions watched trackers as milestones fell.
T-Series and the great race
In 2019, Indian music label T-Series overtook PewDiePie after a months-long, meme-fuelled race that turned live subscriber counters into mainstream entertainment — arguably the moment tools like this site became a genre. The corporate-channel era had begun.
MrBeast: the creator takes it back
MrBeast first became the most-subscribed individual creator by passing PewDiePie in 2022, then completed the story in June 2024 by overtaking T-Series itself — returning the overall crown to a single creator, with a subscriber count now in the hundreds of millions.
