Ghost Followers, Explained

Ghost followers are accounts that count toward a follower number but never engage — abandoned profiles, bots, and drive-by follows from giveaway campaigns. Every large account carries some; the question is proportion.

How ghosts accumulate

  • People leave platforms but their accounts persist.
  • Follow-for-follow and giveaway spikes attract accounts with no interest in the content.
  • Bot networks follow at scale until platforms sweep them (the dips explained in why counts drop).

The tell

A wide, persistent gap between follower count and typical engagement — views or likes per post far below what the audience size implies — signals a ghost-heavy following. Engagement rate (see the explainer) is the ghost detector: healthy accounts keep it steady as they grow.
