Engagement rate measures how actively an audience responds to content, not just how large it is. The two common formulas divide engagements (likes + comments + shares) either by followers or by reach — and they answer different questions.
The two formulas
- By followers: engagements ÷ follower count. Measures how alive your existing audience is.
- By reach: engagements ÷ people who actually saw the post. Measures how compelling the content itself was.
Why cross-platform comparisons mislead
A TikTok like costs a thumb-twitch on a feed built for it; a YouTube comment is a bigger ask. Feed-first platforms naturally run higher rates, so compare a creator against their own history or their platform's norms — never TikTok rates against LinkedIn rates.
