Watch Time, Explained

Watch time is the total human-hours spent on your content — the metric recommendation systems trust most, because it is hard to fake and directly measures satisfied attention.

How it accumulates

Every second every viewer stays adds up. Ten thousand viewers averaging four minutes contribute the same watch time as two thousand viewers averaging twenty — but the second video will usually be recommended harder, because per-viewer retention signals quality.

Where it gates features

YouTube's Partner Program famously requires 4,000 public watch hours (or a Shorts-views alternative) alongside 1,000 subscribers — the full rules are in the monetization thresholds guide.

Improving it honestly

Longer videos only help if they hold; a tight eight minutes beats a padded twenty. Watch your retention graph for the cliff, cut what causes it, and watch time follows. See audience retention for the companion metric.
